Gas leaks are dangerous. This safety checklist could save your family — don't skip item #3.
Never Ignore the Smell of Gas
Natural gas has a distinctive rotten-egg smell added by suppliers specifically so leaks are detectable. If you smell gas inside your home: do not use any electrical switches, open windows and doors, leave the property immediately, and call us or the gas emergency line. Never investigate a gas leak yourself.
Annual Appliance Inspections
All gas appliances — hot water systems, cooktops, heaters, BBQs — should be inspected by a licensed gas fitter at least every two years. Caloundra's salt air environment can accelerate corrosion of gas fittings. PumiFlow includes a gas safety check in all annual maintenance visits.
Check Your Gas Meter Regularly
Get into the habit of checking your gas meter reading monthly. An unexplained spike in gas usage can indicate a slow leak that hasn't produced a detectable smell yet. This is item #3 that most homeowners miss — and it could save your life.
Carbon Monoxide Detectors
Unlike gas leaks, carbon monoxide is odourless and colourless. Faulty gas appliances can produce CO gas that is deadly in enclosed spaces. Install a certified CO detector near all gas appliances and replace it every 7–10 years.
Outdoor Gas Points
Outdoor BBQ gas points are a popular addition in Caloundra homes. Ensure all outdoor gas fittings are stainless-steel grade and have an isolation valve at the outlet. Have them inspected every 2 years given the coastal salt environment.
